Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is a forward thinking detective in london's police force. He is contracted to go investigate the decapitations of several people in a town outside New York .There are strong themes in the movie of a barbaric justice system and church.

Young Ichabod |
Early in the movie Ichabod has fleeting memories of his mother (before she was tortured and murdered by a priest). She is what people would call a "witch", but in reality were called cunning folk. These people had knowledge and plants for medicine and were healers. Most of the witch trials were against people using plant medicine, specifically midwives giving willow bark(containing the precursor of aspirin) to women giving birth to ease the pain. As this was a Bible verse the church believed women must endure the full pain of child birth, so they went around killing people giving aspirin calling them "witches". It is true that sacrifice was practiced by some people following pagan beliefs, but then the Romans use to line a whole road with people crucified.
“To the woman He said, ‘I will greatly multiply your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you’” (Genesis 3:16, NASB).

Amanita mushrooms grow underneath pine trees/christmas trees. |
"Jonathan Ott also draws parallels with flying reindeer: reindeer had been reported to consume the mushroom and prance around in an intoxicated manner afterwards"
You will find in the movie that there are good witches and bad witches. In reality as I said, these people were known as cunning folk and were plant healers, though the church labelled them witches.
I hope you enjoyed this breakdown. I hope it was enlightening. :)
